1. How does the Wind Energy Program work?

The Oklahoma Wind Energy Center is situated on 1,200 acres along the Harper and Woodward county lines. FPL Energy, the largest generator of wind energy in the nation, operates this facility. OMPA owns 34 General Electric 1.5 megawatt (MW) turbines at the Center. The turbines have a generating capacity of 51 megawatts (MWs), providing enough electricity to power more than 15,000 homes in Oklahoma.

On September 26, 2003, the Center became the State’s first large-scale commercial energy project when the turbines began producing power that went into the electric grid for the 35 Oklahoma Municipal Power Authority member systems. The OMPA Board of Directors adopted a policy on green credits, making this environmentally-friendly power option available to municipally-owned electric systems. As an OMPA member, we can then offer this wind energy to our customers. Just contact the Utility Billing Office to enroll in this great program!

2. What is the Heat Pump Rebate Program?

Ground-source heat pumps meeting a minimum Energy Efficiency (Eff) Ratio rating of 15.1 and with an integrated water heater or desuperheater for domestic water heating are eligible for $800 per ton. Air-source or dual-fuel heat pumps meeting a minimum SEER rating of 15 are eligible for $250 per ton. Air conditioners meeting a minimum SEER rating of 16 are eligible for $100 per ton.

3. Do Compact Fluorescent Bulbs (CFLs) have poor light quality?

Complaints about the light quality of CFLs really shouldn’t be an issue anymore. Just make sure to properly evaluate which CFL to purchase before buying. You’ll want to check out the Kelvin, or K, number listed on the packaging. CFLs with K numbers between 2,700 and 3,000 give off a soft bright light, like incandescents. CFLs with K numbers between 3,500 and 6,000 give off a bright light. As you go up the K number scale, the light gets bluish and closer to daylight.

By taking a little extra time to educate yourself on CFLs and by carefully reading the packaging, you greatly reduce the risk of being disappointed and can enjoy one of the best investments available.
