Another important service that the Traffic Engineering Division provides to the citizen of Ponca City is traffic collision mediation. All police-investigated collision that occur with the city limits are recorded and evaluated by the division to identify common factors that may be correctable by traffic control changes and /or geometric revisions to the roadway. An annual traffic collision report of accident history with proposed improvements is presented to the Ponca City Traffic Commission each spring. All recommendations for accident reduction approved by the Traffic Commission are submitted to the Board of City Commissioners for final authorization and funding.
On average each year, there are 470 traffic collisions, with 225 injured and one person killed. The contributing factor most commonly cited by the Ponca City Police Department in their accident investigations is failure to yield. That can mean failure to yield at an intersection, from a driveway, or when turning left into the path of an oncoming vehicle.
