The Ponca City Police Department was founded in 1899, and through the years has grown with the community to the current service and staffing level. The department currently is allotted 55 sworn officers, and there are 7 full time employees working in clerical, records, and community liaison positions. We also have a jail facility with 5 full time employees, Emergency Communications/Dispatch with 11 full time employees, Animal Control with 4 full time employees, and Emergency Management with 2 full time employees.
The Police Department provides regular Police patrol and call response. We also provide traffic enforcement and collision investigation through the Patrol Division and Motorcycle Unit. We do criminal investigations as well as drug and narcotic investigations through the Detective Division. Through a cooperative agreement with the Ponca City Public School System, we provide two School Resource Officers. The department has its own training center and firearms range and a Lieutenant who is responsible for coordinating training for all of our employees. In the fall of 2013, we will be obtaining a Police K9. Within the Police Department, we have a Tactical Unit (SWAT), tactical negotiators, a bicycle unit, accident reconstruction specialist, drug recognition experts; state certified trainers, firearms instructors, emergency vehicle operation instructors, and forensic interview specialists. Our officers average over 100 hours of continuing education training a year.
Public Safety is a unique profession. Protection of citizens is one of the most basic functions of any responsible government. For the services we provide, citizens don’t have the ability to shop around. We must strive to provide the best service possible to keep our community safe. We have a front row seat to the best and worst of the community. We work to develop positive relationships with other city departments, community organizations, our schools, our businesses, and our neighborhoods. We host a Citizens Police Academy every year from January to April. The academy allows up to 20 citizens to learn more about what we do and how/why we do it. From this academy, the department has gained a solid core of volunteers who provide approximately 4,000 hours of volunteer service to the department and community every year. Several times a year we hold a “Coffee with a Cop” event and allow citizens to visit with us in a relaxed environment. Our officers go out into the community and do presentations civic groups, church groups, youth groups, schools, and businesses on a multitude of topics. Officers of the Ponca City Police Department serve on community boards and work on projects to address drug problems, underage drinking, family and domestic violence, and many other areas. Because of this, the Ponca City Police Department enjoys a great relationship with the community.
We can never reach a level where everyone we contact is happy, but the law abiding citizens in the community need to have confidence in us and have an overall feeling of safety. Every part of the organization is an integral part of our success, and the people who work here are people of character – they are honest, brave, competent, and loyal, and I am proud to be a part of this team. I am a Ponca City native, and my interest is in providing great service and safety to the community I love.
